American Airlines New Baggage Policy
The revised baggage policy takes effect for tickets purchased on or after Sept. 14, 2009.
The changes apply to transatlantic travellers on any flight operated by American Airlines for travel to, from or through India, as well as the following European countries – Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
Customers who purchase certain economy class tickets on or after the effective date will be able to check one bag for free and will pay $50 for a second checked bag.

Example of when the charge will or will not apply.
JNB (BA/AA*/VS/SAA) X/LON AA ORD AA X/LON (VS/SAA/BA/AA*) JNB
Charge will not apply on the outbound, as BA will check client through to first point of entry into the USA.
However, on the return the charge will apply, as AA will check passenger in.
JNB (VS/SAA/BA/AA*) LON AA ORD AA X/LON (VS/SAA/BA/AA*) JNB
Where there is a stop – eg on the outbound the operating carrier’s baggage rules will apply.
When checking in at LHR for the flight to the USA, the new AA baggage rules will apply for the transatlantic flight and the same will apply when checking in for the return flight from the USA.
